Show and Tell Monday: How I Met Your Father

I'm linking up with Becky again today for her show and tell blog!

1. Tell us about how and when you met your love and what attracted you most to him.

I have known my husband since we were about 12 or 13.  My dad was the California representative for and organization called Christian Service Brigade (he retired in January), which is similar to boy scouts, except it's Christian (hence the name) and men mentoring boys oriented.  Matt was involved in it in junior high and high school. and I would go to the camps and conferences and help my mom do all the cooking. I knew who he was and always thought he was SO cute, but thought he was too good for me.  I remember bringing all the dishes to the dish room when his squad was on duty just so I could see him, he was so cute!

In 2006, I was looking on a mutual friends MySpace (remember that?) and saw this boy I recognized on his "top 8" list.  I went on Matt's page to stalk for a little while, then sent him a message, just saying hi and to see if he remembered me.  Luckily he did, and added me as a friend and we started messaging each other back and forth.  I would send him a message in the morning when the little girl I was nannying was napping, and then he would read my message after work and school that night and message me back.  We asked each other all sorts of questions and just got to know each other really well.  I was in Southern California and he was in Northern California.

After a month of emails we had our first date...hiking with my entire family the day after Easter (luckily my dad was not there).  We had a really great time and didn't talk a ton because we were both nervous, but oh man, we flirted a ton!  He drove me to the airport that night and asked me to be his girlfriend the next day (my first boyfriend).  We dated long distance for 10 months, then he asked me to be his wife, then we dated long distance for another 10 months, with 3 of those months being in the same city.  despite long distance being very hard and taxing on a relationship, it was all we knew of each other, and we both really desired to have it work, so it did!!

2. Show us the very first {or one of the first} pictures you guys ever took together. {Feel free to show us more than one}
This was on our second "date."
The first wedding we went to together (Clark and Auni), also our first summer together, 2006.

This is a month after the previous photo, taken in Washington state.

3. Tell us some of your favorite memories that you two had together.

Giants Baseball game (my first major league game), our first kiss, Disneyland, visiting Yosemite together, hanging out with his family (I sometimes would visit them even if he wasn't there), and lots of other things.  Both Matt and I feel like 7 years ago is too long to remember all the fun things we did together.

4. Tell us your favorite qualities about this man, what makes him "the one."

My husband is such a hard worker, he takes his job very seriously and puts so much time and effort in to it, and we are so grateful for him and his job.
My husband is SUPER HOT, and what wife doesn't want to be extremely attracted to her husband.  I look at him every day and I am always amazed that I got to marry such an attractive man!
My husband loves his family, not just B and me, but his parents, siblings, extended family and my family as well.
My husband loves the Lord, which is such a vital part of our lives.
My husband makes me laugh and is a constant flirt...he shows me daily that he loves and is in love with me.
My husband is an excellent father.  I am daily in awe at how good he is with our baby girl.  I knew he was going to be good, but he is truly great at being a dad, and being a dad to a little girl, nonetheless.  He makes her so happy.
My husband LOVES to cuddle with me and it makes me so happy.
My husband loves me.

5. Tell us what your "date nights" typically look like.
Date night?  What's that?  We so rarely go on dates, but it's not because we have a kid, we rarely went on dates before we had a kid.  When and if we do go out, we like to just do stuff together.  I'm not a dinner and movie kind of a girl, it's just so expensive. That doesn't mean I don't like to go to dinner, I just feel bad when we eat out because it costs so much.

I love this man I married more than I could ever explain to any one, and I try to show him daily how much I love him and how much he means to me.  I am such a blessed woman to be married to my best friend, my one love, my partner and my daughters father.  I daily feel blessed!!

Succulent Festival and Santa Cruz

I married into a green family, the type that loves plants.  My father in law, husband, and both my brothers in law work for horticulture companies and my mother in law majored in landscape architecture.  Needless to say, I have found more of a love for plants since being a part of their family.  That doesn't mean I'm good at keeping plants alive, I was definitely born with my moms ability to kill plants, but, I try to keep them alive.  So when my mother in law asked if we wanted to spend our Saturday at a succulent festival in Monterey, I of course said yes!!  It was a beautiful morning, we took my brother in law and his girlfriend with us in our car, and we enjoyed Disney tunes on the way there.

Brooklynne loved being pulled around in the wagon

and she obviously liked the water bottle

some of the many that I loved!!

these are the ones we purchased, along with the drift wood.

After we left there we got lunch at my in laws favorite place, Carpos and then drove down to the beach. We went to Sea Cliff Beach in Santa Cruz, which is very nice.  This was Brooklynne's third time to the beach, but she hadn't been in a while, so the sand really confused her.  We walked down to the water and she started chasing a wave back in to the water, only to get drenched by an upcoming wave, which she did not appreciate.
A day with daddy=our favorite!

Lung feet and wet pants.

me and my main man...he makes my heart happy!

what's it going to be...up or down?

so angry at the sand.

Sorry for only posting a picture of you falling, Jared...it's just a really good falling picture!

Brooklynne didn't take a nap almost all day, so I put her in the Ergo, covered her with a towel and walked down the beach with her.  She fell asleep only for an hour, but I was thankful for anything by then.

At Sea Cliff beach there is an old concrete war ship that they sunk at the end of the pier back in 1929.  Check out this wikipedia page for more information, it is really quite cool.

I walked to the end of the pier with the sleeping baby and got some pictures of it, it was so cool.

My father in law LOVES to boogie board, and Matt's always game to getting in the water, so they played out there for close to an hour before coming back in.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist, he's just so hunky!!

We started getting packed up because it was getting cold out...I love this picture because it looks like i changed it to black and white, but it's a color photo, it was just so grey out!

I got Brooklynne all warm in her jammies, and we played in the car while everyone got ready to go.  It was a wonderful trip and we had so much fun.  I hope we go again next year!
I do believe that this was my longest post in almost a year...crazy, sorry for the bombardment of pictures!

Tasty Tuesday: Black Beans

Last month when I posted my recipe for my southwest chicken salad, I said I would post about my black beans.  Instead of buying canned black beans, I buy dried black beans in bulk and cook them.  This saves us money and I know that we're just eating black beans, not all the preservatives and sugar and other things they have to put in the canned stuff.  I do miss the convenience of not having to cook them, but the price is what keeps me cooking them every time.  Black beans are the only ones I make because we use them often.  I do not cook any other beans, because I don't use other beans often enough to make it worth it, so if I'm making a recipe that calls for kidney, chickpeas, or other beans, I will buy a can or two of those.  I do sometimes cook up pinto beans to make refried beans, but that's not very often.  Anyway, here's what I do for the beans.

Put the beans in your crock pot with the water, you don't have to rinse black beans, just red kidney beans.  However, if they look dirty, I would recommend rinsing them, also look through them for rocks.

Add the salt and cook on high for 4 hours.

Look at all that nice bean juice...

Delicious beans!!  Allow to cool

I use quart size zip top bags, and just use the same ones over until they get a hole in them.

I use a food scale, and I measure out 15 ounces of beans and 1 ounce of liquid in to each one.

It's equivalent to a tiny bit less than two cups of beans and 2 Tablespoons of liquid.  Cans of black beans are typically 16 ounces, so most recipes that call for beans are going to call for a can, I like to have them ready in the right amount.

I try to get most of the air out before placing them in the freezer.  I usually use a pot (4.5 bags) in about a month, but they will stay good up to six months.   They are quickly defrosted in the microwave, under running water, or in the refrigerator.
Let me know if you make them and what you think!!

Black Beans

4 1/2 cups dried black beans
13 cups water
1 Tbsp salt (I use kosher)

Combine all the ingredients in a crock pot and cook on high for four hours.  Allow the cooked beans to cool before bagging them in quart size zip top bags at 16 ounces a bag.  The beans can be quickly defrosted in the microwave, under running water, or in the refrigerator.

Show and Tell: When I was 17

I'm linking up with Becky again this morning for her show and tell link up:

1. When you were 17, tell us what kind of car you drove, where you worked, and what you were usually up to on the weekends.

When I was 17 I drove a mini van...yes a mini van.  My dad was a missionary and my mom, a stay at home mom, so people gave my family their old cars when they were getting new ones.  It was very kind, and it was a car...so I didn't mind.
This is basically the car I drove.  I, however totaled it my senior year of high school and was made fun of for a long time for it....I also had panic attacks any time I saw a car accident for a good 3 years after the accident, it was pretty rough!

Job...I was 17 most of senior year which is when I worked at A Sweet Affair Bakery...oh my goodness, so tasty!  They had the best sandwiches and bread and baked goods.  There was a lot of "ooopps, I dropped a cookie on a plate and it broke, I guess I'll have to eat it."  That was 10 years ago and I still get cravings for their sandwiches!!

Weekends....hmm, I don't think I did a lot.  I definitely didn't do a lot of homework.  I had church on Sundays, but I cant remember what I did on weekends, which makes me feel very old.

2. Show us a picture of you when you were 17 {roughly}.

I think this is somewhere around 17, or maybe 18, I'm not sure...but this is the best I could find.  This is also the Christmas where my brother had his wife use the leftover hair dye from highlighting her hair to do his...his blonde hair was changed to yellow...super crazy looking.

3. When you were 17, tell us what you wanted to be when you "grew up."

When I was 17 I wanted to be a chef so badly!  I also wanted to be a mom, but I've wanted to be a mom most of my life...yay for that!

4. When you were 17, tell us the kind of boys that you dated. Did you have a type? Do you have a relationship you remember well? Tell us about it.

I didn't have a boyfriend at 17, and I don't remember who I liked at that time, it changed a lot in high school. I liked the quieter guys, and I was always attracted to brown haired boys...hmm.  Matt, my husband, was my first boyfriend at 21.

5. When you were 17, tell us where you pictured your life 10 years from then. Did it turn out the way you expected it to?

I was hoping that I would be married and either working in a restaurant or as a personal chef.  The first part happened, I am married, and I am a personal chef for my husband and daughter, and that's how I like it!!  I wouldn't have it any other way!

Did you link up today with Becky, let me know if you did!

Show & Tell Monday: All My Favorites

I'm back again this week for Becky's link up, I didn't write last weeks, sorry.

1. Tell us about your 5 favorite memories in your life.

Obviously my wedding day, what a wonderful day it was, and I am so blessed to have married such an incredible man.

Holding our baby girl was born is by far my favorite memory, but I wish that I remembered more from that day, some of it is a blur.

The day I told my family we were pregnant, and the look on my sisters face when I said that we were naming our daughter after her was priceless and when I will never forget.

Matt was my first boyfriend, and him asking me to be his girlfriend is a favorite memory because it was so sweet.

Another favorite memory is when my parents brought my little sister home from the hospital, it was the day I decided I wanted to be a mom someday!

2. Show us 3 of your favorite beauty products.

Unfortunately I don't have any.  The beauty products I use are used because I can't afford better stuff.  I do use one descent thing, Mary Kay concealor, but I use it because my sister gets it for me at 50% off, I like it, but it's not a favorite.

3. Tell us what your favorite TV shows are to watch.

 (in no particular order)

4. Show us 2 of your favorite pictures.

my dad, sister and me (circa 1987)

 Brooklynne and her Great Grandpa

 my beautiful girl
I know it said only two, but I can't just put up two.

This is one of Matt's favorite photos, him and his grandparents

5. Tell us your favorite things to do during "me time."

Get pedicures, watch shows with my husband, drink coffee, work out

Did you link up with Becky this week, let me know if you did so I can read yours too!!
